Vintage N.B. CURTISS Round Back Mandolin antiqueN.P.B. Curtiss was a musician, composer and inventor. Best know for his invention "Curtiss' Piano and Organ Indicator" which he patented in both USA and Canada. Curtiss worked from his New York office on Broadway street. He was active from about 1850s into perhaps the 1880s or 90s.
I believe that Curtiss may have bought parlor guitars, mandolins and perhaps other instruments and sold them branded as N.B. Curtiss. I have seen other mandolins exactly like this, with different branding. Curtiss published several guitar music books and many songs, piano and guitar compositions/songs.
With some minor restoration this mandolin would be a beautiful addition to any collection. N.B. Curtiss Guitars are very hard to find, and a Curtiss marked Mandolin is even rarer.
information provided by listing viewer:
You are correct about NB Curtiss adding his label to this mandolin for sale. I have one exactly like it with a Carl Fischer label. Carl Fischer's 1911 catalog called it "Model 6 1/2" -- whatever that means. I've seen others with an American Conservatory label. American Conservatory's 1907 catalog called it "Model 9602."
I believe all of these mandolins were made by the long defunct Lyon & Healy Co. of Chicago "for the trade."
