Sterling mandolin Tonk Brothers A style Martin strings

This is a vintage A-style mandolin. It has the brand ‘Sterling’ on the head and ‘TBCo’.
TBCo stands for Tonk Brothers Company.
Tonk Brothers was a Chicago based musical instrument wholesaler, established in 1893 by Charles J. Tonk (1856-1918). When the last of the Tonk family left the business in 1913, when it was taken over by Paul Moenning.
This mandolin was probably made by Lyon & Healy or Washburn.
There is tell-tale evidence of a headstock break. The repair was well done & is almost undetectable. It is also missing the cover of the tailpiece.
The tuners are Waverly style and work well. It has a new set of Martin brand strings. It has an inlaid tortoise pickguard. The soundboard appears to be solid spruce. It plays well and sounds great.
