Why order this 2019-D US 50th Anniversary Commemorative Apollo 11 Clad Half Dollar Coin from the Moon Mission Releases?
This coin was struck as part of the U.S Mint's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. The culmination of a decade of work, the mission landed man on the moon for the first time and dealt a major psychological blow to the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. Part of a mintage of 750,000 pieces, this coin bears the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint, where it was struck from cupro-nickel. This piece earned a special designation, Moon Mission Releases, from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) because it was submitted to their Florida headquarters on the actually anniversary dates, July 16-24, 2019. Grading information for coins that receive that designation comes on a special label that features a picture of an astronaut standing on the moon next to an American flag.

Gary Cooper's artwork emerged victorious in a contest held to find the obverse design. it features one of the footprints left by an astronaut on the surface of the moon, a symbol that reminds us that it - and we - were forever changed by the accomplishment. The image, which was engraved by Joseph Menna, also pays tribute to the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs that made the moon landing possible by including their names along the rim. Depictions of the moon in various stages are interspersed among those names. Other inscriptions on this face include "LIBERTY," "2019," and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The convex face of the coin replicates the curvature of the item that dominates it, the visor of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet. That visor reflects the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module side by side on the lunar surface. The coin's face value, "HALF DOLLAR," is included within the visor, while other parts of the helmet bear the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). This face was the work of Phebe Hemphill.
